Employment agreements: questions to clarify before signing

Compare duties, conditions and written commitments without confusing an employment agreement with permission to work.

An offer can bring relief and an urge to sign immediately. Take time to understand the document and identify questions needing answers. An agreement is more than a pay figure: it describes a working relationship and may refer to other records. Read when you can compare, make notes and request clarification.

Identify the parties and documents

Check the employer’s name, role, intended location and start date. If an agency is involved, ask which organization employs you and who directs daily work. Keep the version received and identify referenced policies, job descriptions, confidentiality terms and other attachments. Request missing annexes before agreeing.

IRCC’s worker-rights page explains that employers must provide an agreement to holders of employer-specific permits and describes relevant contents. It also notes that provincial, territorial or federal standards may apply depending on the job. Do not transfer a rule heard in another province without checking its scope. Official source.

Read conditions together

Identify pay, hours, payment arrangements and described deductions. Distinguish guaranteed amounts from conditional bonuses or estimates. For unfamiliar wording, request a written calculation example rather than guessing. Compare more than headline pay: schedules and necessary expenses can change an offer’s practical meaning.

Examine duties, travel, supervision and assignment changes. If the interview promised a location or schedule, look for it in writing. Raise discrepancies before signing. A table comparing advertisement, interview and agreement can reveal differences without assuming the most favourable version automatically prevails.

Have sensitive clauses explained

Pay attention to initial periods, amendments, termination and obligations after departure. A written clause alone does not establish its validity or consequences in your circumstances. Seek appropriate legal advice with the complete document if necessary. General information cannot replace reviewing the agreement and applicable rules.

Do not sign an isolated page without the remainder. Check dates, blank spaces and version consistency. Obtain an agreed correction in a revised document or a clearly connected amendment. Retain the complete signed copy and correspondence explaining accepted changes.

Separate employment and immigration

An agreement or job promise alone is not permission to begin work. Check status conditions and required steps separately before starting. Do not treat an oral promise of immigration assistance as a guaranteed government decision. Clarify the employer’s actual commitment and keep it distinct.

Bring the agreement, advertisement and questions to a consultation. Sort issues into working conditions, understanding the text and activity authorization. This helps identify the appropriate adviser for each subject. It does not presume an outcome, but supports a decision based on identifiable commitments rather than an overall impression.
