Admission and study permits: two separate decisions

Understand the roles of the institution and IRCC so you can organize your studies without confusing school acceptance with authorization.

“My school accepted me, so I can prepare to leave.” That conclusion moves too quickly. Admission and a study permit are separate processes that connect without replacing each other. Organize your project into distinct files: institutional requirements, immigration requirements and practical settlement arrangements.

The school application answers a first question

The institution reviews your candidature through its procedures: program choice, academic records, admission conditions and enrolment. A positive reply describes a relationship with the school. It is not an IRCC decision. Keep the complete letter and conditions instead of retaining only the sentence announcing acceptance.

Separate completed items from conditional ones in your preparation table. A record sent to the school is not automatically sent to the federal administration. Likewise, follow up an intake change with the institution and review immigration consequences. Do not expect two independent systems to coordinate without your involvement.

The permit application has its own instructions

IRCC explains the study-permit application procedure and documents for different situations. Its page distinguishes applications before arrival from certain special cases. Follow the instructions matching your actual circumstances rather than copying an international student already living in Canada. IRCC

Review the applicable document list and check relevant attestations, evidence or exceptions in current instructions. The document guide addresses several elements, including admission and financial resources. A completed academic document does not mean every other requirement has been met. Avoid treating a general checklist as an automatic eligibility assessment. IRCC

Build a calendar showing dependencies

Identify steps that depend on another reply: final admission, funding records, possible appointments and IRCC correspondence. Record the contact and expected confirmation for each step. This helps identify the actual bottleneck instead of treating every delay as the responsibility of one service.

Label school deadlines separately from dates in immigration letters. Do not confuse a course start date with an IRCC processing commitment. If schedules become incompatible, ask the institution about deferral options and review documentary consequences before deciding.

Review commitments before spending

Before a major expense, read contractual terms for refunds, deferrals, accommodation and transport. Establish what happens if circumstances change. A limited promotional offer should not replace this review. Financial commitments and an immigration outcome remain separate matters even when an intermediary packages them together.

  • Keep the admission letter and its conditions.
  • Build a separate IRCC application checklist.
  • Identify attestations that actually apply.
  • Separate academic and administrative deadlines.
  • Check deferral and refund possibilities.

What should you bring to a consultation?

Bring your admission, exact program, available records and unresolved questions. IR Immigration can discuss how the processes connect using that concrete plan. A useful assessment does not promise a permit because a school said yes; it identifies precisely what still needs checking.
